Showing my age
on June 11, 2010
I’ve been at my new contract job for about a month now. My new overlords have been patient and kind. And I’m actually learning stuff. Which could be the problem.
I’ve been doing graphics so long it was very comfortable and easy for me. It wasn’t always great, but it was understandable and I usually knew where I stood. All this web design and development has been stressful and makes me want to cry out like a Monty Python Gumby.
They say change can be very hard but is good for you. They also say it harder for an older brain to learn new things. I wish I had my son’s teenage brain. Actually… he needs it more than I do, and it’s not really working correctly yet. Guess I’ll keep my old one.
Mr. Gumby has always been a favorite of mine, and I’ve expressed his complaint many a time over my career. It still surprises me the energy it takes (mental and physical and spiritual) to learn new systems — I’m usually tired for a couple weeks when I change jobs.
I don’t think I’d want my teenage brain back. Oh wait — it never left!
