Desktop? Notebook?
I have a problem. Actually I have several problems but I’d rather not scare people away, so I’ll only talk about my computer problem. My computer problem is “what kind of Mac should I buy”?
Some background. I’ve worked on Macs off and on since 1989 and love them (the first Mac I used was a SE30 running System 6). I’ve worked on PCs as well and they are pretty good too. I haven’t had a Mac at home in several years and it’s time. I have a Dell 8500 that’s going on 7 years old. I bought it after a layoff and a PC made more sense at the time. I have a big birthday coming up. I’m not going to tell you how old but it rhymes with “nifty” (or “shifty”) and, by gum, I’m a-gittin’ me a MAC. Now which one?
My choices are the 15″ MacBook pro or the new 27″ iMac. Both are the same price and both have their pros and cons. I know notebooks outsell desktops now , but that 27″ monitor is pretty appealing. . . . Hmmmm. . . . .
Joe,
I would recommend getting the Macbook pro as well as a larger external monitor (which I imagine you might already own). That way you’ve got portability AND the big monitor.
My recommendation is to get the iMac. What I do currently is have a newer intel Mac Mini desktop and for portability I have a Powerbook G4. I prefer to have an older portable because you can get a high end computer for a cheap price on the used market. Plus you wont be as upset when it falls out of your bag or gets stolen. I use the newer mac as my main digital hub, it is used for finishing my comic as well as keeping together my professional photography projects. It also houses all of my media for syncing to iPods and iPhone. I use the Mobile Me cloud to keep all of my info in sync with each other. Plus when I upgrade next, I plan to get the iMac myself.
I would go with the iMac, there amazing. I bought the 27″ in January and it has been a great. I still have an old PowerBook G4 I use when I’m away, but the 27″ is great!
