We can rebuild it?
Well, it’s happening again. The update schedule has turned to worms. May was a busy month and I thought June would settle down a bit. That didn’t happen. Our oldest graduated High School on the first and I didn’t realize the volume of weekend consuming graduation parties there would be for the class of 2012. (In my day I got a couple cards, a cake and a clock radio) So June has been the month of grad parties. Chris also had college orientation this month and I went for the parent’s day. Big changes primed for the fall. (for more info, check out the next big step link to the right).
And to add a wee bit of panic, my iPhoto library blew up. It sounds like a small thing but I had most, if not all, of our digital photos from 2004 to today in that library. AAAAUUUUGGGHHHHHH! I’m deep in recovery mode. Luckily I have 2004 – 2009 covered with other archives. I seem to have lost the last two years. I think major family events are mostly covered, but lots of in between shots are MIA. We’ll see how good the recovery software is. The next step is getting off-site backup. I know of Carbonite. Anyone else have any suggestions?
I’ll have some new OSS strips as soon as my pulse drops to a manageable level.
I use back blaze. If you still have the iPhoto library file, control-click on it, and select “View Package Contents” you should then be able to see a folder called Masters – open that, and everything should be there by year.
Thanks, I’ll check out Back Blaze. Unfortunately the iPhoto library file is long gone. Accidentally deleted or corrupt, it’s a no-show. We’re at the recover deleted files stage.
Ouch. Good luck, freind.
I had mine die (not iPhoto) but it saved all my information in my EXIF tags so recovery took a few hours instead of the expected weeks. Good luck with that! Do not do ANYTHING on your system until you recover your files. You can overwrite them unwittingly.
I don’t know when my library was deleted/corrupted/other hideous thing, so the drive was active for… maybe a week? I’ve recovered a lot so far so maybe I didn’t lose too much. (hoping)
I know the feeling. When I moved from iPhoto to Aperture, I deleted my iPhoto library to make more space on my hard drive. Little did I realize that when you import your iPhoto images into Aperture they are just a linked file back to your iPhoto library. All my photos from 2006 (when I went digital) to 2010 are now nothing more than a thumbnail image inside Aperture.
Ouch! The worst losses are the ones you do to yourself. I lost a full day of work early in my computer graphics career so I’m usually rather good about backing up files. I just didn’t have these last two years backed up yet. I am starting to find pics, so I’m hopeful.
