The internet never forgets
on March 31, 2011
OK. With the flap over the CEO of GoDaddy proving what a 19th century, Great White Hunter he is, I’m starting my search for new Domain and Hosting services. Got any suggestions? (The transfer is complete and OSS is happily settled in its new home)
I’m not providing any link to the video. I’ll bet you can find it pretty easily. My stomach really turned when the heavy metal music started blaring and the camera zoomed into the hats with the GoDaddy logo.
I understand the local’s crops need protection, but I would hope that shooting the animals would be a last resort. The “Gee ain’t it fun to shoot things?” attitude came off as arrogant and crass.
I would recommend Host Gator. I recently switched from GoDaddy to Host Gator in January. The price is about the same, but you get unlimited wordpress databases, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage. Plus WordPress works fast and flawless on their servers unlike GoDaddy where it works slow and decrepit. Visit them here: http://secure.hostgator.com/~affiliat/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=CaptainV45
I have yet to have a problem with their servers. They will even transfer your site for you.
I’m getting a lot of Host Gator referrals. They either have a lot of fans or very good twitter marketing. They’re on the short list for the new OSS home.
I have had good luck with them. A friend from college told me about it when I started twittering about how slow my web pages were loading on GoDaddy (it took over an hour to upload and post my comic with Comic Press Manager).
I have a coupon that can save you 25% on Host Gator hosting: OHNOCOMIX1
Hi Vince,
Thanks for the coupon. I used it and signed up with HostGator. (I actually was given many coupons but thought I’d go with a fellow cartoonist’s) I went with NameCheap for domain registration using their “BYEBYEGD” promo. Gator moved my wordpress installation over seamlessly (which was a relief) and the whole domain and hosting transfer only took the weekend (faster than I thought). I like how HG gives you the ability to have addon domains. I now have my portfolio site and my wife’s site hosted there as well (joekandra.com, annekandra.com). OSS does seem to run a bit faster. Now all I need to do is start drawing cartoons again.
Thanks Joe. I have all my sites hosted on one account there too. It’s nice to finally have each of them at their own domain, and not forwarded like I had with Go Daddy. I might have to try out the NameCheap promo, since all of my domain names are still registered by GD with two up for renewal this month. Thanks for using my coupon code. Any money I get from the Gator’s commission service always goes back to funding my comics and art.
Hi Joe.
Been reading you comic for a while, but never commented. I really like your work, but just posting to say “oh wowo you’re so cool” isn’t my thing.
Yet, today I will, and not (only) because of your work. I had not heard about that story with the elephant and GoDaddy’s CEO, and I learnt it through your comments.
My wife is VERY engaged for the animal rights, and so am I, even though she’s more committed than I am. So, I can only salute yout move. Going through the hassle of changing your web hosting service because of some sad story like this one is just awsome.
So yes, I like your work, but I like that you have guts even more. Big kuddos to you, sir.
And I do apologize if my message doesn’t make much sense. I’m french, and so english isn’t my home language. I hope it was clear enough 🙂
Hi Ulrick,
Thanks so much for your kind words. I don’t consider myself any kind of animal rights person but the whole elephant hunt struck me as wrong headed. I fear too many people still think killing “problem” animals is the first choice. Hopefully enough people will leave GoDaddy to make an impact, but I’m a little doubtful. At least they won’t get any more money from me.
Send me your address and I’ll send you a sketch.
Thanks again. And by the way, your English is much better than my French would be 😉
Joe
